PROJECT OVERVIEW
This short documentary was produced for the Barnum Museum to document the scientific and historical investigation of an Egyptian mummy coffin within the museum’s collection. The project followed museum professionals, historians, and researchers as they worked to better understand the artifact and share that process with the public.
The film was designed to translate a complex research process into a clear narrative that could support museum interpretation and public engagement.
THE CHALLENGE
Museums often conduct detailed research that is rarely visible to visitors. The goal of this project was to document the investigative work surrounding the mummy coffin while presenting the process in a way that would be accessible to a general audience.
The film needed to balance historical context, scientific analysis, and expert insight while remaining visually engaging and easy to follow.
APPROACH
The project used a documentary storytelling approach built around interviews with museum staff, historians, and subject experts. These interviews were combined with observational footage of the research and examination process.
By structuring the film around expert perspectives and real investigative work, the documentary provided viewers with a clear understanding of both the artifact’s history and the methods used to study it.
PRODUCTION PROCESS
Filming included interviews with researchers and museum staff along with footage documenting the examination of the artifact and related research activities. The production focused on capturing both the technical work and the broader historical context.
In post-production, interviews and observational footage were edited into a narrative structure that explained the investigation while maintaining the pacing and clarity expected of a museum documentary.
OUTCOME
The finished documentary presents the investigation of the mummy coffin in a format that is accessible to museum audiences while preserving the expertise and research behind the project.
The film demonstrates how documentary production can help museums share research, interpret artifacts, and make behind-the-scenes investigative work visible to the public.
