PROJECT OVERVIEW
Showman’s Shorts is an award-winning short-form educational video series produced for The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Launched in 2021, the series explores the life and legacy of P.T. Barnum through concise, accessible stories about history, entertainment, culture, and the Museum's collections.
Working alongside William Sarris Productions and historian, writer, and host Betsy Golden Kellem, I helped develop the series and establish a repeatable production and editing process that allowed the Museum to continue sharing its stories with online audiences.
Over several years, Showman's Shorts grew into a library of more than 80 episodes, earning both Regional Emmy and Telly Award recognition.
THE CHALLENGE
How does a museum maintain meaningful public engagement when its historic building isn't fully accessible?
For The Barnum Museum, digital programming offered an opportunity to continue educating audiences while restoration work limited traditional visits.
But producing a continuing series presents different challenges from making a standalone documentary.
Episodes need to be researched, recorded, edited, reviewed, and published consistently. They also need to maintain recognizable production quality without requiring a large crew or extensive resources for every release.
The challenge was creating a sustainable format that could support years of programming rather than a handful of individual videos.
THE APPROACH
Showman's Shorts was designed around short, focused stories that could be filmed efficiently and edited into engaging educational episodes.
During production, we used a repeatable filming setup with consistent lighting, framing, and teleprompter support. Working with Betsy, I helped establish a comfortable on-camera process that allowed her expertise and personality to come through naturally.
In post-production, I shaped the episodes through editing, pacing, audio, supporting visuals, graphics, and consistent branding.
As the series developed, the workflow also included sponsor recognition, credits, institutional review, and preparation for YouTube publication.
This approach helped the Museum build a recognizable digital series while allowing the production process to remain manageable.
MY ROLE
My contributions to Showman's Shorts have included:
- Producer and video editor
- On-location production and lighting support
- Teleprompter operation and presenter support
- Editorial pacing, graphics, and audio finishing
- Sponsor graphics and credit updates
- YouTube publishing and episode scheduling
In 2026, I also worked directly with the Museum to help restart publication from an existing backlog of recorded episodes.
With limited funding available, we prioritized a batch of five Showman's Shorts episodes, updated sponsor materials, completed editing, and scheduled their release.
The work was completed in collaboration with William Sarris Productions and The Barnum Museum team.
THE OUTCOME
Showman's Shorts grew from an individual programming idea into an established series of historical videos that the Museum could continue sharing with audiences beyond its physical building.
The repeatable production model helped create a substantial library of educational content while maintaining a consistent look, tone, and editorial standard across episodes.
In June 2025, Showman's Shorts received a Boston/New England Regional Emmy Award in Historical/Cultural – Short Form Content (Up to 10 Minutes).
The award recognized the collaborative work of:
- William Sarris — Producer/Director
- Rui Pinho — Producer/Editor
- Betsy Golden Kellem — Writer/Host
The series also received a 2025 Silver Telly Award in the History Series category.
More importantly, the project demonstrates how museums and cultural organizations can turn historical expertise into ongoing, professional digital programming without approaching every episode as an entirely new production.
